Rumours and Theories
While the Harry Potter series was still being written by JK Rowling, the multitudes of fans who took to the internet couldn’t help but speculate and discuss with each other about the possibilities and probabilities on what would happen in the upcoming books. The most important question, of course, will Harry survive? This is a list of some of the most prevalent rumours and questions that came up during this period.
Some quick notes on Harry Potter history:
Philosopher’s Stone was the first book in the series. The only person who was asking herself what was coming up at this point was JK Rowling herself! Chamber of Secrets was released one year after Philosopher’s Stone (in 1998) so the online fan world still hadn’t taken off yet. And don’t forget that the internet itself was nowhere near as popular or accessible as it is today! Prisoner of Azkaban (1999) and Goblet of Fire (2000) were released at the time when Harry Potter was really taking off online (he was already famous in the Muggle World). At this point, the first fan sites like Jenna’s UHPFC and one year later, The Leaky Cauldron, followed by this site’s first incarnation as Harry Potter Canada in 2002 were starting to appear on the internet. Now come the rumours, questions and theories:
- Book 5 will introduce us to new settings in the magical world that haven’t come up or been shown to us before.
- Mrs. Figg, Harry’s old babysitter is a witch and is the Arabella Figg who Dumbledore refers to at the end of GoF.
- The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher will be female.
- Fleur Delacour will be the new DADA teacher in Book 5.
- Mrs. Figg will be the new DADA teacher in Book 5.
- We will learn about how or why some people become ghosts and others don’t come back at all.
- There will be an important revelation about Lily Potter.
- Some old characters from the first three books will make reappearances in Book 5 (Lockhart? Lupin? Sirius Black? Oliver Wood?)
- Something important or unexpected is going to happen with the Dursleys.
- Ginny Weasley will play quidditch in Book 5.
- Ginny Weasley will be Harry’s girlfriend.
- We will learn more about Harry’s parents, including what their jobs were which might be important to the plot.
- A few important characters will die.
- Hermione will be a prefect.
- Book 5 will be darker/scarier than the previous books.
- Harry’s bond with Wormtail/Pettigrew will weaken Voldemort in some way.
- The question of whether Percy will side with Cornelius Fudge or his own family was discussed after GoF.
- Book 5 will be shorter than GoF.
- Fawkes the phoenix is Godric Gryffindor’s reincarnated spirit.
- We will learn about Harry’s grandparents.
- We will find out about the families of some Hogwart’s teachers.
- The source of Harry’s family gold will be revealed.
- Will Harry become an animagus like James?
- Harry will get a new owl or other pet.
- Harry will learn more about what death means in Book 5.
- Book 5 will be at least as long as GoF!
- The real ‘Mad-Eye’ Moody will appear in Book 5
- A main pro-Harry character will die in Book 5 and the death will be “horrible to write”. (JKR interview).
- Book 5 will be called Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
- Mr. Weasley’s car, Dobby, the Dementors and Aragog will all make reappearances..
- Order of the Phoenix (OotP) will be longer than GoF!
- The fact that Harry has his mother’s eyes will be very important.
- There is a room that Harry has been in before but that is much more significant than he knows (from JKR interview).
- We will find out why Lily and James were targeted and murdered by Voldemort.
- Book 6 will be called Harry Potter and the Pillar of Storgé.
- Book 6 will be called Harry Potter and the Mystic Kettle of Nackledirk (this one actually came from Jo herself who had written it sarcastically/jokingly in her website’s FAQs section in response to the Pillar of Storgé rumour.
- Mark Evans will be an important character (debunked by Jo in her FAQs section).
- Harry is a horcrux (this one was huge in the lead up to DH!)
